From January 3 through January 9:

1913     Birthday of Richard M. Nixon, 37th US president and Commander in Chief:  “I would not like to be a political leader in Russia.  They never know when they’re being taped.”

1919     Germany saw the formation of the National Socialist German Workers party (forerunner to the Nazis).

1941     President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave his “Four Freedoms” speech.

1945     The Allies won the Battle of the Bulge (in Belgium).

1952      General Dwight D. Eisenhower released a statement that he would accept the Republication nomination for president (if that nomination would be offered).  His statement was issued from Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers in Europe. 

1953     In his State of the Union message, US President Harry S. Truman announced that the US had developed a hydrogen bomb.

1957     Elvis Presley received his pre-induction medical exam for service in the US Army (at the Veterans’ Hospital in Memphis, TN).
