1846     Discovery of ether, by dentist William Morton.

1902     First US patent for manufacture of rayon.

1908     Henry Ford introduced the Model T … fondly known as “the Tin Lizzie.”

1922     Naval Aircraft Radio Laboratory made first radar observations.

1924     Birthday of US writer Truman Capote, forever identified with this observation about mental health:  “In California, everyone goes to a therapist, is a therapist, or is a therapist going to a therapist.”

1974     First Lady Betty Ford had a mastectomy … and for the first time, information on the importance of breast health became part of the public discussion.

1976     At a wildlife symposium in Washington, DC, the chair of the Council on Environmental Quality (Russell Peterson) noted:  “We breathe today the same air that Julius Caesar breathed.”
