“How can I get rid of my accent?”

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

I recently addressed a large national conference.  After my session was over, someone in the audience came up and said, “My accent really bothers me.  How can I get rid of it?”

First, I shared this information:  Studies show that audiences are not bothered by a regional accent … as long as they can understand what you’re saying.  In fact, many listeners enjoy hearing diverse accents.  It provides vocal variety and helps give each speaker a distinct personality.

But, if your accent bothers you, here are some simple steps to consider:

Start by contacting several Toastmasters clubs.  You can get good feedback.  Plus, an officer of the organization might know about local speech coaches.Another option:  Contact the Speech/Drama Department at local colleges/universities.  Those professors should be able to provide you with area contacts (and perhaps share helpful reading lists).

Finally, contact the Speech Therapist at your local hospital.  Even if not trained to deal with accents, a skilled speech therapist can point you in the right direction.

Keep in mind:  Geography should not be a barrier.  I coach clients via phone from all around the world.  No matter where you live, you can get expert help to improve your voice.

I’ll discuss vocal techniques in my blog from time to time, so be sure to check back in.  And let me know if you have any specific delivery issues you’d like me to address.

The next time you give a presentation, ask a trusted colleague to count the number of times you use “fillers” … um, ah, uh, like, you know (to name some of the worst offenders).  Monitor this for two months.  Be sure to list the results in writing.  A written record will make you more accountable.  Your ultimate goal is to eliminate those fillers … completely.
